High Performance Building Design Project

Graduate Course - High-Performance Building Design | Fall 2024

Professor: Dr. Yun Kyu Yi

Softwares Used: Rhino 3D,  Design Builder, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator

This project evaluates the environmental performance of Allen Hall, a student residence at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), with a focus on improving energy efficiency and thermal comfort. Utilizing DesignBuilder simulations, HOBO data logging, and real-time energy metering, the study examines building geometry, materials, occupancy patterns, and HVAC zoning. Key issues identified include significant heat loss through windows, inefficient HVAC zoning, and outdated lighting systems. Proposed retrofits, such as upgrading insulation, installing LED lighting, and improving HVAC zoning, aim to reduce annual energy consumption by 30-40%. These enhancements will not only increase comfort but also lower operational costs while preserving the building’s architectural integrity.
